Fall 2010 - Classes & Special Programs

In order to take advantage of the Nord-Bridge "Member Price" for the programs, a current 2005 membership is required. The course registration fee must be paid in full to hold a space in the class. Once a class is full, a wait list will be taken. If a second class is organized, you will receive a phone call to confirm your attendance. Advanced registration is necessary for the following programs.



Arts & Crafts Programs

Oil Painting - Session 1

This course is designed to acquaint the novice to oil paint, brushes and the wet on wet painting technique of oil painting, without the expense of buying equipment and materials.
Materials supplied: the use of easel, paint & thinner, brushes, paint board and the instruction video or DVD disc. (Also a picture provided by the instructor to guide the student, while painting their picture).
Procedure:At home watch the picture to be painted (on video or DVD). Come to class and paint the picture step by step with the instuctor available at all times. The student will complete a picture in three hours or less. The series contains six pictures. The video tape or DVD is supplied at a cost of $5.00 Students have the option of either keeping the video/DVD or the $5.00 will be refunded in full if the video/DVD is returned at the end of the session.
This course is ideal for the person who wishes to learn to paint for fun but is not necessarily interested in going to art school.
  *Supply fee for each session is $20.00 & $5.00 for video/DVD ($5.00 is refundable if students chose not to keep the video/DVD).

Paper Tole - Advanced Class (Wednesday)

This class is for art enthusiasts who enjoy the craft of creating three-dimensional pictures from art prints. Participants in this class take more then 1 of the same art print and cut, shape, mold and elevate to make the prints three dimensional. This class is an advanced class, and just for fun as everyone helps each other.

Woodcarving

In this class you will learn the art of carving wood. You woll be able to create your own carved projects. Beginning students who have little or no experience in carving are welcome. Come join us for an adventure in woodcarving. This class is ongoing so you can register and join anytime.

Christmas Ornamental Fabric Balls

Learn to make unique Christmas ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree this year or create them to give away as gifts!  These layered fabric ornaments are made with out sewing a stitch so they are a perfect craft for anyone.  This is a perfect craft to use up scrap fabric and left over ribbons from other craft projects.

Pop Bottle Crafts - Ear Rings & Pins

Learn how to make this environmentally friendly craft with Hazel.  All you need is one empty 2L washed, clear pop bottle!  Hazel will show you how to cut the patterns, paint the design and attach the pins.  These make great gifts or beautiful accessories for you, friendsl and family members.

Swedish Weaving

Swedish Weaving is an art that dates back several centuries and is a form of embroidery which uses "Monk's Cloth". While studying this relaxing and fun technique, you will have the opportunity to learn how to create a variety of projects such as: Afghans, lap throws, placemats, etc... Sample patterns will be supplied. Cost will be discussed in the first class.

Keep Fit - Strength & Flexibility Class

Want to tone and shape your muscles? This class is geared to develop muscular strength and endurance. Light hand weights and mat work will be utilized in this class. Movements will focus on how to reduce bouncing, jarring & impact and to increase energy.

Yoga (Mondays) Session 2

This class offers an opportunity for students to strengthen the body/mind connection. The instructor will explore aging, anatomy, meditation, breathing and relaxation. Asanas [postures] are slow gentle movements done in an un-intimidating friendly manner. Participants are asked to wear loose clothing and bring a yoga mat. Pilates class focuses on increasing the strength of the ‘core’ muscle group. Core muscles are the abdominals, glutes, and upper legs. They are the key for stability, balance, good posture and also aid in the reduction of injuries. All Pilates classes are beginner to intermediate friendly.

Fitness & Recreation

Clogging

Clogging is an American folk dance that is similar to tap dancing. Clogging is done to almost any kind of upbeat music. Country & traditional bluegrass music are the most popular. Clogging is a great form of exercise, so come out and try this form of dancing. This program runs for 10 weeks.

Roll and Stroll Walkers

Join this active group of walkers who walk each week around different parks and pathways throughout our beautiful city. Every Wednesday our walkers choose a different location to walk. Enjoy the beautiful paths of Henderson Lake, Nicholas Sheran Park, Indian Battle Park or stroll through one of the several man-made lakes we have around the city. On days that the weather does not cooperate the group will walk indoors (ie. shopping malls)

Keep Fit - Adapted Aerobic Class

This class is geared toward a gradual and safe improvement in fitness levels. Class instruction will focus on aerobic conditioning, toning & stretching. This is a fun, safe, enjoyable effective exercise class specifically desgined for the active senior.

Fitball

The Fitball program will contain a variety of exercises designed to target core strength, increasing overall balance, stability and coordination. This course will consist of a variety of activities including both individual and partnered exercises. Although the focus will be work with light weight fitness balls, accessory materials, such as personal mats & light free weights will be integrated to provide a greater variety of benefits. Individuals of all exercise experience are welcome and a variety of exercises allow for any new and interested people to drop-in at anytime. *No Class on February 18*

Tai Chi for Relaxation & Health

Tai Chi’s (Taijiquan) slow gentle movements exercise your whole body to promote good health and enhance a relaxed mental attitude. Fall prevention, balance, coordination, flexibility, memory recall, decreased anxiety and focused concentration are improved with practice. Many doctors recommend Tai Chi for those who require low joint impact exercise. Participants report having increased stamina for standing, better balance, digestion, sleep and brain fitness. Many have even noticed their golf swing is improved. Lynne Hunter-Johnston began her study of Taijiquan in 1987. She teaches at the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College, at seniors’ centers, nursing homes, private classes, and the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Classes run on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is open to beginners, novice and advanced participants.

Line Dancing

Line Dancing is a relaxed and fun form of country and western dancing, and you don't need a partner. Also, it is excellent exercise for both body and mind. We really do dance in lines. Our group is called YUTUKNDANZ (you-too-can-dance) and everyone who dances with us is a member. You might feel a little self-conscious at first but after a few classes you'll lose that feeling, guaranteed! Just one stipulation – you MUST enjoy music (we use various music types, not just country)! Join us or just drop by to enjoy the music.

Health/Educational Programs

Basic Computer & Internet

A basic course, no minimum skill or qualifications to participate. This course is intended to be an entry level introduction to using a computer and using the Internet. This course introduces the student to "Windows" and how to manage the programs. Learn how to search on the Internet. Each student will create and learn how to use an e-mail account. Students will also learn how to use a scanner to scan photos or documents into the computer; be sure to bring in some photos/documents that you would like to have scanned.

Special Presentations

Wise Owls Program

The Wise Owls Program is dedicated to providing fraud prevention education for seniors. Join Constable Dan Walton, as he talks about scams and frauds. The Wise Owl Program also helps assist seniors in protecting themselves. Over 6000 seniors become victims of fraud each year in Alberta, most frauds are not reported becuase the victim often feels embarrassed. Please attend this presentation to learn about this helpful and informative information to help protect you and your family from fraud.
